In my first year of teaching English as a Second Language at a middle shool in east L.A., I felt it was my duty to give my students not only knowledge, but also, wisdom. Every day, I would write each of the following sayings on the board and require them to copy it down. The English saying is given first, then the Spanish translation. #1 Knowledge is power Saber es poder #2 Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. Manana es el primer dia del resto de tu vida. #3 You reap what you sow. Lo que siembras se cosecha. #4 We have nothing to fear but fear itself. No tenemos que temer a nada mas que el miedo. #5 He who pays the piper calls the tune. El que toque el instrumento decide la cancion. #6 If I give you a fish, you eat today, if I teach you how to fish you eat every day. Si te doy un pescado, tu comes hoy. Si te enseno como pescar, tu comes cada dia. #7 Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Los que no recuerdan el pasado estan sentenciados a repetirlo. #8 Religion without science is blind. Science without religion is lame Religion sin ciencia es siega. Ciencia sin religion no tiene sentido. #9 Show me a person who has never made a mistake and Ill show you somebody who has never achieved much. Ensename una persona que nunca a hecho un eror y yo te enseno alguien que nunca logro superarse mucho. #10 Creativity is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Creatividad es: 10% inspiracion, 90% sudor. #11 Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. Algunos nacen grandiosas, algunos logran grandiosidades y algunos tienen grandiosiadades envuelto hacia ellos. #12 A trip of a thousand miles begins with one small step. Un viaje de un mil millas empieza con un paso pequeno. #13 You can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink. Peudes guiar a un caballo a la agua pero no puedes hacerlo tomarla. #14 The whole world is a stage and all the men and women merely actors. Todo el mundo es un teatro y todos los hombres y mujeres son actores. #15 Love makes the world go round. El amor hace que el mundo de vueltas. #16 Everbody loves somebody sometime. Todos queremos a alguien algun tiempo. #17 Learn by doing. Aprende por medio de lo que hagas. #18 If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Si piensas que la educacion es cara, trata la ignorancia. #19 They know enough who know how to learn. Ellos saben suficiente que saben como aprender. #20 Be careful what you ask for, you might get it. Ten cuidado do lo que pides, tal vez se convierte en realidad. #21 The nail that sticks up gets hammered down. El clavo que se sube se martillara #22 The function of wisdom is discriminating between good and evil. La funcion del juicio es la discriminacion entre lo bueno y malo. #23 Only the educated are free. Solamente los educados son libres. #24 Free your mind and the rest will follow. Libera tu mente, y el resto seguira. #25 The only one who makes no mistakes is one who never does anything. El unico que no comete errores es aquel nunca hace nada. #26 Slow and steady wins the race. Despacio y firme ganaras la carrera. #27 That man is richest whose pleasures are the cheapest. El hombre mas rico, es aquel que le la placer lo mas barato. #28 A true friend is someone who can help us do what we can. Un verdadero amigo es aquel que nos ayuda a hacer lo que podemos. #29 Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed. Por mandato, la naturaleza debe de ser obedecida. #30 Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. No preguntes lo que tu paiz puede hacer por ti, preguntate que puedes hacer por tu paiz. #31 Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. Nadie puede hacerte sentir inferior, sin tu consentimiento. #32 There can be no real freedom without the freedom to fail. No puede haber verdadera libertad sin que la libertad te falle. #33 Without music, life would be a mistake. Sin musica, la vida seria un error. #34 They know enough who know how to learn. Saben suficiente quieres saben aprender. #35 The secret of happiness is freedom and the secret of freedom is courage. El secreto de la felicidad es libertad y el secreto de la libertad es corage. #36 Its OK to make mistakes, but you must learn from them. Es bueno cometer errores, pero uno debe de aprender de ellos. #37 Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime. Pobreza es el padre de la revolucion y el crimen. #38 An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Una manzana al dia mantiene alejado al doctor. #39 Early to bed, early to rise make a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Acostarse temprano y mananear hace al hombre saludable, rico y sabio. #40 Appearances can be deceiving. Las apariencias enganan. #41 Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated. Trata a todo aquel que conozcas, como te gustaria que te trataran. #42 Use your wit to amuse, not to abuse. Usa tu ingenio para entretenerte, no para abusar. #43 Strive for excellence, not perfection. Luchar por excelencia, mas no por perfeccion. #44 Spend less time worrying about whos right and more time deciding whats right. Pierde menos tiempo en preocuparte quien esta bien y mas en decidir que esta bien. #45 Be sincere, even when you dont mean it. Se sincero, aunque no lo sientas. #46 Life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards.
